- look into a publisher when you think your work is exploitable, they have connections you do not.
- try to get a co-publishing deal, but your first contract will probably be meager
- don’t sign too long; they do not want to renegotiate a contract
- build in some performance bonuses – upside rewards for success
- sign with someone who believes in you
